Impact of Anonymous Quotations

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Anonymous quotations have either directly or indirectly impacted millions of people around the world. “Things get done easily, if people are more interested in working than taking the credit,” goes a famous saying. This explains the success of anonymous quotations since a long time.

Quotations are a reference to a recognized or a renowned expression. Anonymous quotations slightly differ from credited quotations in terms of the source involved. Anonymous is something wherein the source is unknown or debatable. In this situation, it becomes difficult to provide the credit.

Zig Ziglar once said, “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” This is the basic reason why quotations in general are so popular. Irrespective of quotations being anonymous or credited, the impact that they carry is huge. The purpose of both types of quotations remains the same. These are used to inspire people and unify them towards a common goal.

Why Do Some Quotations Remain Anonymous?

It is often said that an anonymous quotation is better than quotations being wrongly credited. There have always been theories and debates to confirm the origin of certain popular anonymous quotations. Many anonymous quotations have their origin as ancient tales and stories. Most of the successful and even the not so successful anonymous quotations have been from the early part of the 19 th century. However, internet-age has managed to form a bridge between the quotation and its source.

Sources of Anonymous Quotations:

Historic speeches, government formations, movements, campaigns provide an opportunity for politicians to use quotations as their slogans. These modes often lead to the success of all forms of quotations.

Old sayings and proverbs form the base of many anonymous quotations. Like anonymous quotations, many proverbs cannot be traced to an individual origin. Some are made up by writers and historians to provide motivation to the readers. Many articles in newspapers and magazines use these anonymous quotations to explain their point of view. Slogans used in political movements also provide rich source of anonymous quotations.
